Knights And Squires is a small, independently-made board game. This page explains, in plain language, what it collects, why, and what choices you have. There's no account system, no ads, and no third-party analytics or tracking SDKs of any kind.
What's collected
When you play, the following may be sent to and stored on our own relay server:
- Your display name: whatever you type in before a game. It isn't verified against any real identity, and you can type anything you like.
- Your chosen portrait: one of five preset illustrations, not a photo of you.
- The game itself: the full move-by-move history and outcome of a match.
- A random install ID: a random identifier generated on your device the first time you play. It isn't derived from your hardware, account, or advertising ID, and it isn't shown to you or other players. We use it to let you reconnect to your seat in an online game, to match players more fairly, and to link together games and feedback that came from the same install. It is not linked to your real identity. It is attached to online matches and to feedback, and to recorded vs-AI and Hotseat games unless you opt out (see Your choices).
- Feedback you send us: if you use the in-game "Send feedback" option, the message you type, along with your display name, your random install ID, the game code and game ID (if you were in a game), the app version, the screen you were on, whether you're on a small screen, and basic device info (your platform, e.g. web, desktop, or Android app, and your browser/app user-agent string). Feedback is only sent when you choose to send it.
Like any web server, our relay server briefly sees your IP address when you connect. It's used only for rate-limiting (e.g. to prevent feedback spam) and isn't stored with your games or feedback.
For an online match (Host Game / Join Game), this is sent live so the game can be played and synced between opponents at all; that part isn't optional, the same way it wouldn't be for any online multiplayer game.
For a game played entirely on your own device (Play vs AI or Hotseat), nothing is sent while you play. Once the game ends, a single record of that finished game (your display name, portrait, the full move history and outcome, plus your random install ID) is sent to our server, unless you've turned this off (see Your choices below).
Why
Recorded games are used to help improve the game (including its AI opponent) and to eventually support a replay feature for looking back at how a match unfolded. The install ID is used for reconnection, matchmaking, and grouping a single install's games and feedback. Feedback is used only to find and fix bugs and improve the game. None of this is sold, shared with advertisers, or used for anything beyond that.
Your choices
In Settings, the toggle "Send game data to help us improve" controls whether your finished vs-AI and Pass & Play (Hotseat) games are sent to us. It is on by default. When you turn it off, those games, and the install ID that would have come with them, are never sent. The setting is stored only on your device, and takes effect immediately.
It does not affect online matches (Host Game / Join Game / quick match), which need a live connection to the relay server, and which include your display name, portrait, moves, and install ID, as described above. Feedback is separate too: it's only ever sent when you press send. If you'd like data we hold about you removed (for example, games or feedback tied to your install ID or display name), email us and we'll delete it where we can identify it.
Stored on your device only (never sent to us): your settings, your display name and portrait, your random install ID, and your lifetime play stats (the "Chronicle"). Clearing the app's data or site storage removes them and generates a new install ID.
What isn't collected
No email address, no real name (unless you choose to type one as your display name), no payment details, no precise location, no hardware device identifiers or advertising IDs, and no analytics of any kind. The only identifier we use is the random install ID described above.
Children's privacy
Knights And Squires isn't directed at children and doesn't knowingly collect information from anyone it knows to be under the age of 13 (or the equivalent minimum age where you live).
Changes to this policy
If what's collected ever changes meaningfully, this page will be updated and the "Last updated" date above will change accordingly.
